The Arc of Matagorda County was founded in 1955 as a
support group to aid families who had children with mental
retardation. Little information and no educational services were
available at that time. Parents began to meet, discuss their
problems, and seek solutions. The Arc established the first
educational program for children with mental retardation in the
community. Later The Arc created a workshop where adults receive
daily training and participate in social activities, now known as the
Edith Armstrong Center.
